THE SHORT VERSION

Steps from Jackson Square, Fives is my favorite cocktail stop in New Orleans: beautifully made classics, an individually mixed three-drink sampler, excellent food, and a welcome escape from the French Quarter's forgettable tourist cocktails.

Order the three-cocktail sampler, stay for the food, and don't let the French Quarter address fool you.

I love New Orleans. I love the music, the food, the chaos, and the fact that a great cocktail can feel like part of the city's DNA. I've found plenty of bars here worth coming back to. But if I had to pick my favorite place for a cocktail in New Orleans, I'd probably pick Fives.

Which is funny, because Fives sits right in the middle of the French Quarter, steps from Jackson Square. And I'm usually skeptical of drinking in the most tourist-heavy parts of a city. I've had French Quarter cocktails that I carried out the door, took one more sip of, and promptly introduced to the nearest trash can.

Fives is emphatically not one of those places.

Slip through its rather unassuming doorway and the whole mood changes. It's intimate and polished without being stuffy, the kind of beautiful little bar where you can settle in and forget that a sea of tourists is just outside.

And the cocktails? Fantastic.

I've had some wonderfully inventive drinks here, including a marrow-washed Old Fashioned. But what keeps bringing me back is how beautifully Fives handles the classics and the drinks that pay tribute to New Orleans cocktail culture. Familiar ideas, elevated with care, without losing what makes them worth drinking in the first place.

My favorite way to explore the menu is the three-cocktail sampler. And this is the important part: these aren't pre-batched drinks poured from a bottle. Each cocktail is individually mixed and served as a smaller version of the real thing. Three little drinks, each made with the attention you'd want in a full pour. It's a brilliant way to taste your way through the menu without having to commit to three full-sized cocktails.

And they're not just good for a sampler. They're genuinely excellent drinks. The balance, the precision, the thought that goes into each one—Fives makes even a familiar cocktail feel like something special.

The staff have always been warm and welcoming, too. And don't overlook the food. It's a step above the bar snacks you might expect, thoughtfully done and delicious enough to make staying for another round a very easy decision.

There's no shortage of places in the French Quarter willing to sell you a drink. Finding one that makes you stop, sit down, and appreciate what's in your glass? That's a different story.

So if you're wandering around Jackson Square and the prospect of another neon-colored Bourbon Street cocktail isn't exactly calling your name, look for that understated doorway. Fives is the kind of place that reminds you why New Orleans is such a great drinking city.
