Minneapolis, Minnesota North Loop
Gori Gori Peku.
A favorite worth returning to
Japanese whisky & meticulous cocktails
THE SHORT VERSION
A Little Japanese Perfection in Minneapolis
I'm just going to say it: Gori Gori Peku is the best cocktail bar in Minneapolis. A handful of seats, almost meditative attention to detail, and a Kado Old Fashioned so beautifully balanced that I wouldn't change a thing.
The menu doesn't need to reinvent itself every week. The pleasure is in watching a few drinks get made with extraordinary care, then working my way through them again. It's a Japanese whisky bar, but for me, the cocktails are where the magic happens.
Just trust the bartender, enjoy the craftsmanship, and for the love of whisky, don't ask for the ratios.

A favorite worth returning to
I'm just going to say it. Gori Gori Peku is the best cocktail bar in Minneapolis. And honestly, I don't think anything else in Minnesota comes particularly close to what they're doing here.
Tucked away upstairs near Sanjusan and Kado no Mise, Gori Gori Peku is a tiny Japanese whisky bar that feels like an entirely different world. I've never been to Japan, but from everything I've read and heard about the legendary precision and artistry of Japanese cocktail culture, this place seems to embody it beautifully.
The attention to detail is almost absurd.
Seriously, I don't know how this place makes money. There are only a handful of seats, yet somehow you'll find a bartender, a server, and a barback all working in this little space. And when they're not making drinks? They're polishing already crystal-clear glasses until they're somehow even more crystal clear.
Everything here is intentional. Every ingredient, every movement, every piece of ice. Watch the bartender carefully hand-cut a block of ice to fit your glass perfectly. And even the glass might be a work of art.
Chef and owner Shigeyuki Furukawa practices kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics with gold. You might find yourself sipping a cocktail from a beautiful handmade vessel with delicate gold lines running through it. Even the imperfections are intentional. It's incredible.
And then there are the cocktails.
Gori Gori Peku makes the best Old Fashioned I've ever had in the Twin Cities. Their Kado Old Fashioned features a house blend of three Japanese whiskies, house-made fig syrup, and bitters, balanced so perfectly that I honestly wouldn't change a thing.
I did, however, once make the mistake of asking the bartender for the exact whisky ratios.
Yeah. Don't do that.
Apparently, there's a line between appreciating someone's craft and asking them to hand over the secrets of their masterpiece. I may have crossed it.
But that's the thing about Gori Gori Peku. These aren't cocktails you need to improve upon. They're cocktails you need to experience.
The menu doesn't change particularly often, which would normally bother someone like me who loves experimenting with new drinks. But here? I don't care. Every cocktail is so exquisitely crafted that I'd happily work my way through the same menu again and again.
And while it's technically a Japanese whisky bar, my recommendation is to skip the straight pours and head directly for the cocktails. That's where the real magic happens.
There's something wonderfully intimate about the whole experience. A handful of seats, a bartender working with almost meditative precision, and drinks that feel like they should cost considerably more than they do.
Gori Gori Peku isn't trying to reinvent the cocktail every week. It's doing something much more difficult: taking a handful of drinks and making them as close to perfect as possible.
If you love cocktails, this place is special. Really special.
Just trust the bartender, enjoy the craftsmanship, and for the love of whisky, don't ask for the ratios.
